We use mind-body exercises to help release pent-up tension that is subconsciously stored in the body. The emphasis in the session is for the client to learn ‘how’ stress and anxiety are manifested in their body and then you will learn practical tools to self-regulate and eventually let go of extreme and repetitive holding patterns which cause distress or states of feeling unsettled.

Somatic counselling helps with a wide range of conditions; for example, people who suffer from stress, anxiety, depression, grief, addiction, problems with relationships, as well as issues related to trauma and abuse. Many health conditions can be compounded by stress and anxiety, for example, chronic physical pain and digestive disorders can often have a high component of aggravation from stress and anxiety which therefore compound, aggravate or extend an illness. Somatic counselling can be used in conjunction with other forms of counselling and psychotherapy and can enhance the effectiveness of classical talking therapies because it helps clients connect with their felt senses, therefore, assisting them to feel more embodied as they explore their history in classical talking therapy.

During our work together we will pay attention to physical responses which arise when triggering memories or thoughts are accessed. Physical techniques, such as deep breathing, relaxation exercises, visualizations, and meditations are used to help relieve symptoms and gain insight into your specific internal stress response and its alleviation.

The theory behind somatic counselling comes from developments in the understanding of the polyvagus nerve and its function in regulating stress. What it teaches us is that the mind, body, and emotions are inseparably linked in a continuous biofeedback loop. Through developing awareness of the mind-body connection and using specific interventions, somatic counselling helps release tension, anger, frustration and other emotions that remain held in the body from past negative associations and experiences. The goal is to help you learn tools which can help you feel safe and secure in your body.
